What a waste of good oil...Fireball is coming to get Mario! Mario kicks butt! (Hammer Time!)This fireball isn't afraid! What's he looking at? Rolling, rolling, rolling... keep that barrel rolling......and this one too...   I hope these barrels aren't kegs full of beer.          Big bad blue boy!And his brother! BOING!   SPROING!   Donkey Kong: the man in charge. Pauline needs to get into martial arts so she can save herself.

Rivets Level

The Rivets Level has girders as well, but they are precariously joined together by orange rivets—two rivets for each girder, one on the left and one on the right. The rivets are removed when Mario walks or jumps over them. Once all rivets have been removed, the girders all fall down and take Donkey Kong with it.

Mario's opponents: scads of fireballs, intelligent and on the chase. They can go up and down ladders, although they can't cross empty rivets. Mario will fall through the empty rivets, but he can jump over them. On his trek, Mario has two hammers with which to wage war on his foes.

Mario just starting out on the bottom level. He's going for one of three prizes dropped by the poor Pauline: her handbag. On the second girder, you can see her bonnet. At the top, to Donkey Kong's left, is her parasol. Note the fireball entering the scene from the left, and another in the middle.

Mario clears the second rivet. Fireballs are doing the ladder thing and Donkey Kong is dancing maniacally above, pounding his chest. Pauline is still screaming "Help!"

Mario gets the first hammer and dispatches one of his foes. They're on the run now, but not for long.

Five fireballs on the screen as Mario clears the third girder's rivets.

We cut to the end: Mario jumps over the last rivet and clears the board. The fireballs vanish, the girders all fall, and Donkey Kong beats his chest in surprise for a few moments...

...and then he falls!

Donkey Kong has a headache and Mario has Pauline. This is the only one of the four different screens Mario runs around where he gets the girl and Donkey Kong doesn't immediately run away with her. But it won't last long!

Crazy Kong

The Rivets Level on Crazy Kong is virtually identical. The ladders are yellow instead of red-orange, and when Mario has the hammer they turn yellow and green instead of blue and aqua, but the board is still the same. Pauline's parasol, handbag, and bonnet are all here, as are the two hammers—but if you get the hammer on the far left side of the third girder, the hammer in the center beneath Donkey Kong vanishes. It isn't gone, just turned invisible; you can still jump and grab it. It makes it confusing, however, especially when there are fireballs everywhere.

Mario has just gotten the invisible hammer and is trying to smash his fireball foes.

When Mario rescues Pauline, once Donkey Kong has landed on his head, the message "GIVE UP!!" appears above him. I was never clear on to whom this message was directed: DK, Mario, Pauline, or the player.
