Cleaning Up Your Computer
Simple preventive maintenance can make the difference between a trouble-free computer and buying a new one. Basic internal cleaning is one thing -- anyone can spray canned air around their motherboard! I can go several steps further.
Hardware components. Computer components
get dirty. Power supplies attract dust like steel shavings to a magnet.
Mice and keyboards get gummed up. And it's vital to keep the dust count on
your motherboard and internal parts down to a bare minimum. Disk drives,
CD-ROMs, ZIPs and LS-120s, all of them need to be cleaned regularly.
Printers. What about printers?
Laser and even dot matrix printers need to be cleaned thoroughly and often, and
fewer things get dirtier faster than inkjet printers. The fact is,
self-cleanings, cleaning kits, and feed-through inkjet cleaning sheets just
don't begin to cut the mustard.
Other peripherals. Scanners,
monitors, and just about anything you can imagine. They all get dirty.
They all need to be cleaned.

For most systems, a single hour of labor would take care of top to bottom cleaning and system checkup. Some systems might take longer -- those loaded with every conceivable cleanable device, for example. Even then, you'd not be looking at more than two hours' work.
How Long Would It Take You?
Given lots of practice, you might be able
to clean a whole system's worth of components in that time, but your average
user isn't going to know where to clean and how to clean it.
