What You See Is What You Get
Written by Patti Jerome and Michael Valvo

Info
This was the first single from the Stoney and Meat Loaf album. Along with U.S. Billboard and CashBox Singles charts, it hit the Billboard Soul/R&B Singles Chart for three weeks. Meat said, in his autobiography, that the fact that he and Stoney were white singers--not black--was not popularized since all the promotional shots of he and Stoney Motown had released showed them as silhouettes. Otherwise, he claims, they likely would never have gotten airplay and thus been accepted by the predominantly black audience who appreciated that kind of music. Apparently, once the radio stations discovered they were a white duo, they immediately stopped playing the Stoney and Meat Loaf music--and they vanished from the charts.

In 1971, this song hit:

  • # 79 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart
  • # 79 on the CashBox TOP100 Chart
  • # 39 on the Billboard Best Selling Soul Singles Chart
  • # 23 on the KSEA (San Diego, CA) Radio Station Survey (19 July)
  • # 16 on the WYSL (Buffalo, NY) Radio Station Survey of All Hit Music (31 May)
  • # 14 on the WMID (Atlantic City, NJ) Radio Station Survey (14 July)

Lyrics
(sung by Stoney and Meat Loaf)

Ain't no hidden treasure
In this pot of gold you see
Ain't no way for you to make
No silky purse out of me

Well, I'm never ever gonna change your way
I dig you as you are
And you've got something that I want
And that's worth waiting for

What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
Yeah!

I told you that I loved you
Right from the very start
Now, don't you make me sorry girl
That I opened up my heart

Well, I know that I'm no angel
This ain't my first time out
But you can count on what I got
Cuz what I got's a lot don't you know

What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

When it's cold I want it hot
I've always wanted what it's not
But when it comes to loving you
I'm yours no matter what you do

Oh you're my baby, and I'm your man
This is Mother Nature's plan
You're not too skinny, not too fat
Loving you is where it's at

What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

What you see is what you get

(The last line above is only heard on the single version, due to a longer fade-out.)

Lyrics
(from Live Around the World)

Boy:
There ain't no hidden treasure
In this pot of gold you see
Ain't no way you're going to make
No silk purse outta me

Girl:
Well I'm never ever gonna change your ways
I'll take you as you are
You got something that I want
And that's a way to start

Both:
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

Boy:
I told you that I loved you
Right from the very start.
Now don't you make me start again
Baby and open up my heart

Girl:
Well I know that I'm no angel
Can say my first time out
But you can count on what I've got
Cuz what I've got's enough.

Both:
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

Girl:
When it's cold I want it hot
I've always wanted what it not
But when it comes to loving you
I'm yours no matter what you do

Boy:
Oh, you're my baby, I'm your man
This is not an angel's plan

Girl:
Can't you see it, it's a fact
Loving you is where it's at.

Both:
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet

What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
