Videos |
To my knowledge, there have
been two VHS/DVD releases containing Meat Loaf's music videos.
|
| Hits Out of Hell |
The
Hits Out of Hell video has been released on VHS and DVD. I own
both; they're identical. The HOOH video contains music videos of the same
tracks found on the Hits Out of Hell album release.
Now, I use the term "music video" lightly. For
those of you who don't remember life before MTV (I remember the day it
premiered and we all sat and watched Muggles perform "Video Killed the
Radio Star"), videos weren't special effects-laden extravaganzas; in fact,
often they didn't tell stories. A music video was any video with the song
playing, usually a live performance filmed and dubbed over with the album
track.
The HOOH video contains the following
videos, with brief descriptions. Links to the song pages and original
albums of appearance are provided.
|
- Bat Out of Hell: (BOOH) This is a truly
funny video, and it isn't intended to be. Most of the video is a staged
performance by Meat Loaf and company, and this is great footage from the
late 70s (likely right after the original 1977 BOOH release). However,
it is interspersed with unbelievably cheesy shots of someone riding a
motorcycle at an adrenaline-pumping low speed through a graveyard in the
moonlight. Nothing more, just zooming back and forth... well, zooming
is a bad adjective, as the cyclist is zooming so slowly it's
amazing the bike isn't stalling or falling over.
- Read 'Em and Weep:
(DR)
- Two Out of Three Ain't Bad:
(BOOH)
- Razor's Edge: (MLF) This video is truly
great. A story is being told here, and there's too much to explain; you
have to see it and draw your own conclusions. But the visuals are great,
the cinematography unique and compelling.
-
More Than You Deserve:
(DR) I can
remember the day I bought Dead Ringer and my girlfriend and I
played it in the car. We listened somberly as this sad tale of a man
whose woman, who he met at a truck stop, apparently couldn't keep her
legs closed when alone with his friends. The final verse is, how shall
we say, hilarious. The music video took a different take on this; it
approaches the whole thing as a "jealous male fantasy"; you know, guys,
when you have "love at first sight" (read: instant sexual attraction)
and the animal instinct kicks in and, even though you don't know the
woman, you feel possessive as hell of her. Meat Loaf plays a trucker who
enters a truck stop and falls for the waitress at first sight--only she
has no idea. He sings his song, and of course she doesn't notice.
Meanwhile, other truckers start coming in... and I'll leave it at that.
Suffice it to say, it's extremely amusing.
- I'm Gonna Love Her for Both of Us:
(DR)
-
If You Really Want To: (MLF)
- You Took the Words Right Out of My
Mouth (Hot Summer Night): (BOOH) A live (or staged) performance. The
narrative speech at the beginning, done by Jim Steinman, is even funnier
than the original album. He virtually screams out half his lines--"ON A
HOT SUMMER NIGHT, WOULD
YOU OFFER YOUR THROAT TO THE WOLF
WITH THE RED ROSES???!!!"
- Paradise by the Dashboard Light:
(BOOH)
A live performance, or at least a staged performance, with the album
release dubbed over it.

| Bat Out of Hell II
Picture Show |
There
are six songs on this excellent video, five of them actually from
BOOH2. The inclusion of Paradise is nothing to complain about,
though; yet another live rendition of this classic song, and that's always
nice.
The cover art is the same as BOOH2, more or
less (left and right sides are cropped off). I apologize for the crappy
nature of the picture here, but I haven't gotten that one on DVD yet and
my VHS copy, at about nine years old, is looking pretty ragged.
The BOOH2PS contains the following videos,
with brief descriptions.
|
-
I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't
Do That): (BOOH2) A live performance of this one.
-
Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through:
(BOOH2)
A truly intriguing contemporary fantasy with Meat Loaf center-staging as
"the genie of the carnival" or something like that.
- Life Is a Lemon and I Want My Money
Back: (BOOH2) Live performance of this rocking song.
-
Objects in the Rear View Mirror May
Appear Closer Than They Are: (BOOH2) This video is amazing. Although viewers
may disagree on the interpretation of the first sequence (reflecting the
first verse of the song), the vision is unbelievable. The director
clearly pegged the emotions intended by Steinman's words in the three
sequences here. A must-watch. INTERESTING TRIVIA: Robert Patrick,
known best for his role as the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day
and as FBI Agent John Doggett in The X-Files, is in this
video!
- Paradise by the Dashboard Light:
(BOOH)
Live performance, as mentioned above.
-
I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't
Do That): (BOOH2) A bizarre and truly unique video.
